What Gregor is thinking:
She’ll come today, Gregor thinks, I know she will. She must. After all, she promised me. In the end, all people have is their word. If that’s worthless, then nothing has any value. Words are all we really have. She didn’t come yesterday, or the day before, but something may have come up. She’ll come today — or tomorrow. She promised. And I’ll be waiting here.
